The college is among the earliest institutes which studied plant protection sciences and many famous pioneers of plant protection in China worked here, such as Zou Bingwen, Xie Jiasheng, Zou Shuwen, Zou Zhonglin, Zhang Jubo, Dai Fanglan and Yu Dafu. The establishment of the college in 2000 accelerated the pace and scale of research, and has further increased its competitive position nationally and internationally.
From 2000 to the present, the total research funds have exceeded 380 million Chinese Yuan. Major funding include: 103 projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China (including two major projects, two distinguished young scholars and one international cooperation project), 1 project and 13 sub-projects from the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), 1 key project and 23 special projects from the National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), 7 key projects from the National R&D Project on Transgenic Crops, and 6 projects from the Special Fund for Agro-scientific Research in the Public Interest. It also obtained several important awards from government, such as a second-class ‘National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology’ and other 6 first-class Province or Ministry prizes. In total, the college holds 37 authorized patents and has published over 1,600 research papers (including 480 SCI papers) and 15 textbooks.
