The college is among the earliest institutes that practice scientific research related to plant protection. Many famous pioneers of plant protection in China, such as Zou Bingwen, Xie Jiasheng, Zou Shuwen, Zou Zhonglin, Zhang Jubo, Dai Fanglan and Yu Dafu, have associated with this college. The establishment of the college in 2000 accelerated the pace and scale of research, which further boosted its academic recognition nationally and internationally.
From 2000 to the present, the total research funds have exceeded 380 million Chinese Yuan. Major funding include: 103 projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China (including two major projects, two distinguished young scholars and one international cooperation project), one project and 13 sub-projects from the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), one key project and 23 special projects from the National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), seven key projects from the National R&D Project on Transgenic Crops, and six projects from the Special Fund for Agro-scientific Research in the Public Interest. The college has also won numerous awards, such as one second-class “National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology” at the national level and six first-class prizes at Province or Ministry level. In total, the college holds 37 authorized patents and has published over 1,600 research papers (including 480 SCI papers) and 15 textbooks.
